A Matter of Life and Death
All oppressed people know this feeling. Tevye expressed it best in “Fiddler on the Roof” when he said there are times “when our hearts lie panting on the floor.”
The Need for Prison and Criminal Justice Reform Is Great
On my birthday this year, I continued my tradition of going to the Cook County Jail to have lunch with some of the 5,552 people who are inmates there. These visits remind me of the humanity of those who are in trouble -- and of the inhumanity, even idiocy, of our criminal justice system.

Beyond the Rhetoric
On behalf of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, I am writing to request help from you and the Financial Services Committee with the Protecting Consumers from Debt Traps and Unreasonable Rates Act, the Military Veteran and Vulnerable Consumer Usury Protection Act of 2019, and any related legislation, to make sure that potential negative impacts on the African American community and especially on African American entrepreneurs are identified and mitigated well before the legislation is considered. For several reasons, we are especially concerned about the idea of imposing a 36% usury rate cap.
The Lone Star State has spiders, bats and pumpkins
From bats and spiders to pumpkins, the Lone Star State is home to some of the most iconic symbols of Halloween. Here are some interesting facts about some of these seemingly spooky Texas residents, as provided by Texas A&M AgriLife experts:
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Calls for a Federal Civil Rights Investigation following the Killing of Atatiana Jefferson in her Home
Jackson Lee—“I call on the United States Department of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation of Atatiana Jefferson’s killing to determine how and to what extent Atatiana’s civil rights were violated. While the shooter has resigned from his position as an officer of the Fort Worth Police Department and he has been charged with murder, the shameful and sad reality is that none of this will bring back Atatiana to her loving family. For Botham Jean, Atatiana Jefferson and countless innocent others whose lives were taken too soon and wrongly, law enforcement must develop and vigorously implement methods to limit the loss of life of innocent individuals. My heartfelt sympathies are with Atatiana’s family at this time. I know that if we could bring back Atatiana, we would. But we cannot. We can only hope her death was not in vain. Until that day and beyond, may she rest in peace.”
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Hosts Remember the Constitution: The Constitutional Basis for Impeachment
Jackson Lee—“As the impeachment inquiry of this lawless president unfolds and proceeds, I intend to host more dialogues like the one from yesterday evening, which was attended by hundreds of my constituents, and viewed online by many thousands more. As this impeachment inquiry takes shape, I will be returning to Washington to continue vigorous oversight of this president to definitely conclude whether this president committed the abuse of power of which Professor Martin Levy spoke, and whether removal from office is the appropriate remedy, as was determined for the president under whom John Dean served, before that president resigned in disgrace.”
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Appears Before the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to Combat the Proliferation of Pollutants in Acres Homes and Surrounding Areas
Jackson Lee— “I was pleased that at the conclusion of the hearing, the TCEQ ruled in favor of Acres Homes residents and decided to deny the permit at this time and to submit the residents’ petition to a contested hearing, at a later date. The residents whose rights were vindicated are everyday hardworking homeowners whose only voice is their petition. They had no powerbrokers of which to speak—merely their own advocacy and vigilance. I have worked with this community; I have seen their passion. These residents have invested all their resources into their home, and have seen that hard work and investment undermined by this concrete facility, mere feet from their homes. I urge all involved to work towards a final conclusion that is fair to all and urge the business involved to consider relocation to a more undeveloped area.”

“Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War’s Most Persistent Myth” by Kevin M. Levin
History is a big subject. And yet, each era has inside it a thousand little clues for people, places, and everyday life: clothes folks might’ve worn, toys children played with, maybe, or foods they enjoyed. Those are the things that make history fascinating, even powerful. But add in a bit of quarrel and, as in the new book “Searching for Black Confederates” by Kevin M. Levin, they might make history wrong.
