The Houston Health Department and its agency partners are announcing the schedule for sites (https://houstonemergency.org/covid-19-testing/) offering free COVID-19 tests the week of October 5, 2020. The week will offer more than a dozen free testing sites across Houston, including four mega sites.

Today, Biden for President announced its Latino Leadership Committee, which includes a core group of Latino leaders who will work closely with campaign leadership to engage Latino voters and communicate how Joe Biden will fight for Latino families. The Committee will work closely with campaign leadership to recruit talent in battleground states, provide input on policy initiatives, engage community leaders, and provide input on Latino outreach. Los Angeles Supervisor and former Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and former Colorado United States Senator and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will serve as co-chairs of the Committee, which is composed of leaders from Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The Committee was established to reflect the diversity within the Latino community.

On January 18, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum officially announced that former Astros All-Star first baseman Jeff Bagwell would be a part of the Hall’s Class of 2017. This afternoon in Cooperstown, NY, that became a reality as Bagwell was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez. He is the second player to go into the Hall as a member of the Houston Astros, joining former teammate Craig Biggio, who was inducted in 2015.

Today, Congressmen Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) called on House and Senate Leadership to protect and expand funding for Community Health Centers (CHCs), which play a vital role in treating patients, working with local health departments, and fighting the spread of the coronavirus. In a letter led by Congressmen Gomez and Ruiz, 40 California members of Congress urged House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to protect the $7.6 billion in funding set aside for CHCs in the Heroes Act and to include an additional $1 billion for telehealth infrastructure projects and $1 billion in emergency workforce funding.

High School State Honoree: Zane Magee Nominated by Montgomery High School in Montgomery

The City of Houston is currently awaiting the final word from the 85th Texas Legislature on key pension legislation. The passage of Senate Bill 2190 and House Bill 43 are critical to the City of Houston's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget. The passage of these two pieces of legislation allows the City of Houston to avoid a $240 million budget shortfall that would lead to layoffs for city employees. I am dedicated to making sure the City of Houston's budget is balanced, services are not cut, and I will fight for District E residents.
