Community Corner: Emancipation Park: An Historical Treasure of Houston
Tired of feeling captive, a group of former slaves utilized their resources and talents to raised $1,000 to buy 10 acres of land in Houston 147 years ago to create a space where they could just be free. The space would become Emancipation Park, the central hub of generations coming together with a sense of community. Passing years has seen the park at its ups and downs causing it to be revitalized in 2006 by TIRZ7 and again this year with a $33 million renovation.

In a landmark verdict, a 28-year-old man, Luis Alejandro Valencia, has been sentenced to 55 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the brutal murder of Erik Villeda, a beloved husband and father of two. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, expressing gratitude towards the jury's decision, emphasized the necessity of justice in holding Valencia accountable for his egregious actions.

Damien House never imagined his 2021 would end with him being alone. His entire family was wiped out in an instant in a fiery car crash when a drunken Daniel Canada carelessly got behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking. He then smashed his vehicle into the back of House's wife sedan. Canada hit the car so hard that the entire front end of House's wife vehicle was crushed and burst into flames. House's wife and three sons were all killed.
Alexandra del Moral Mealer Sworn Into METRO Board of Directors
Today Alexandra (Alex) del Moral Mealer was sworn in as the newest member of the METRO Board of Directors. The ceremony took place in the METRO Boardroom with Harris County Commissioner Tom Ramsey administering the oath. Alex was appointed to represent a group of 14 smaller cities that are within METRO's service area.
