Damien House never imagined his 2021 would end with him being alone. His entire family was wiped out in an instant in a fiery car crash when a drunken Daniel Canada carelessly got behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking. He then smashed his vehicle into the back of House's wife sedan. Canada hit the car so hard that the entire front end of House's wife vehicle was crushed and burst into flames. House's wife and three sons were all killed.
Reginald DesRoches Named 8th President of Rice University
One hundred and nine years after its founding and 56 years after the first African American graduate, the prestigious Rice University has named its first African American president. How ironic that a university established by a white rich slave owner would now have at the head an African American from one of the poorest countries in our nation. Talk about progress and achieving the American dream.

Bungee jumping, zip lining, tight rope walking, and skydiving are just some things that you won’t catch me doing. Why? Basically, I have a fear of heights; maybe not necessarily heights but the fear of falling from a very high height. Ironically, being high is why I loved reviewing the vehicle I had this past week. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 Double Cab Long Bed had me riding high and I liked it.
Appreciating African American Music Stirs One’s Soul
Music is a great storyteller. Through written words, a story is told, of course. But, the story set to music also comes alive in all of us with the emotions the music evokes. Hearing a particular song can cause one to smile, cry, laugh, and/or feel comfort, pain, relaxation, or any other sentiment. And, in African American history, music has always been a storyteller for the messages and information music communicates. Slaves escaping the plantation often used the guise of music to send encrypted messages to each other. This is why music is so important to the African American culture and any culture in the world.
The Hungry Free Summer
School bells ringing are a bigger relief for some families than just getting children out of the house. It means that their children will have two well-balanced meals a day at school. One in six children across America doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. Texas is a distant 43rd for children’s overall well-being with a devastating 25% of the children living in poverty. Houston ranks second in the nation for children living with food insecurity. Harris County has the second highest rate of child food insecurity in the nation. A hungry free summer seems unobtainable but in summer 2019 it was made possible.

Rules were made to be followed, not broken. Someone forgot to tell the doctors at New York’s New Amsterdam Hospital, a fictional hospital that is the setting for NBC’s new medical drama New Amsterdam, who are breaking all the rules to give patients the best care possible. Dubbed as America’s oldest public hospital, no one is ever turned away regardless of finances, condition, race, gender, or anything. If you need assistance, they say “How can I help?”

Houston Texans Announce Expansion of Girls Flag Program
Program will now include high school teams from Houston ISD
Today, the Houston Texans announced the expansion of their Girls FLAG Football Program. The program will feature 12 high school teams from Houston Independent School District (HISD), the eighth largest school district in the nation, and nine high school teams from the Texas Charter School Academic and Athletic League. The girls will compete in a six-week season, with gameplay beginning on April 13 and concluding in mid-May. The championship games to be held at the Houston Methodist Training Center.

Five Houstonians Named As Top 25 Finalists in H-E-B’s 5th Quest for Texas Best Statewide Competition
H-E-B received more than 700 entries from 140 cities from across the state of Texas of the most delectable, scrumptious, memorable dishes and beverages for its 5th Annual Quest for Texas Best culinary competition. Official judges have had the audacious task of narrowing down that field to the top 25 and five of them are from Houston. All 25 finalists will compete in the final round of competition on August 9-10, 2018, in Austin, TX for prizes totaling $70,000.
