The Hungry Free Summer
School bells ringing are a bigger relief for some families than just getting children out of the house. It means that their children will have two well-balanced meals a day at school. One in six children across America doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. Texas is a distant 43rd for children’s overall well-being with a devastating 25% of the children living in poverty. Houston ranks second in the nation for children living with food insecurity. Harris County has the second highest rate of child food insecurity in the nation. A hungry free summer seems unobtainable but in summer 2019 it was made possible.

Federal Lawsuit: 3 white Pearland ISD Employees Blacken 13-Year Old African American Student's Scalp with Sharpie 2015 US DOJ Report Shows Pearland ISD Had Heavy Bias
A federal civil rights lawsuit (see attached) has been filed today against the Pearland ISD, a School Discipline Clerk, Head Principal Tony Barcelona, and teacher Jeanette Peterson who May 17, 2019 used a jet-black permanent marker (Sharpie) to blacken the scalp of a never-before-disciplined 7th grader’s head (95 lbs., 4 ft., 11 in.) because they claimed his common African American “fade” haircut with innocuous line design violated the Pearland ISD dress code policy.

Governor Abbott Announces Texas Safety Commission
Commission Will Meet On August 22nd In Austin, August 29th In El Paso
Last week, Governor Greg Abbott announced the Domestic Terrorism Task Force to combat hateful acts of extremism in Texas following the recent shooting in El Paso. Today, Governor Abbott announced the Texas Safety Commission, which will develop an immediate action plan for the State of Texas. This plan will include strategies to provide community healing, combat the rise of extremist groups and hateful ideologies, keep guns out of the hands of deranged individuals, and combat domestic terrorism, including cybersecurity threats. The commission will also produce legislative solutions the State of Texas can adopt to prevent mass shootings and domestic terror attacks.

Texans defeat the Lions 30 – 23 to win their first preseason game
Texans fans got a glimpse of what the upcoming season is going to look like as they watched the hometown team defeat the Detroit Lions 30 – 23. The first team offense under new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly put together a great 75-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to DeAndre Hopkins.

As a seasoned educator with over 20 years of classroom experience, my job has often felt never-ending. Summers were often spent trying to cram as much as I could into my realm of relaxation, without complaining that as a mother of 3, that relaxation that I had been dreaming about all school year may not live up to the hype. With all the added stress that being a parent to school-aged children brings to my job as a teacher, all I ever want to do in the summer is sleep a little later and not have to worry about planning anything. Texans hold joint practice with the Detroit Lions
The Houston Texans resumed training camp today, with a joint practice with the Detroit Lions who is in town early for their preseason matchup with the Texans on Saturday at NRG Stadium. With the fans looking on, the competition got a little heated at times with trash talking by both teams being heard by fans, but it was all in fun. Here are a couple of things I noticed from today’s practice.

Green Bay, Wis.- One thing you can say about the residents of Green Bay is they love them some football. 72,928 fans turned out to watch the Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers play their first 2019 preseason game at Lambeau Field. Green Bay defeated Houston by a score of 28 -26.
