It’s as if she is looking at a direct reflection of herself on television. Before Venus and Serena Williams was ripping through the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) at a rapid pace, there was another African American young lady who paved the way for them as well.

On Sunday, August 11, The Miss Black USA™organization will host its 34th annual Pageant featuring who’s who of young Black women today. Defying negative stereotypes, approximately eighty-percent of this year’s contestants are in graduate or professional school. Three of the contestants are practicing attorneys including the California representative Sydney Colbert, Louisiana representative Yasha Latrice, and the Ohio representative Allison Smith.

HOV/HOT Ramps Temporarily Closed at Northwest Transit Center

The State of Qatar, through its $30 million Qatar Harvey Fund, is providing a grant to Harris County for the creation of soccer fields in Precincts 1 and 4. The fields will serve a dual purpose of recreation for area residents and as water retention basins for flood mitigation. The announcement of the new fields will be made by Ambassador Al-Thani, who chairs the Fund.
